The project:
This project aims to explore how multilingual students in HE perceive and experience their linguistic identity within a monolingual UK education system. It takes a 'decolonising multilingualism' approach (Phipps, 2019), highlighting the voices of those who have been historically marginalised, and critically reflecting on language hierarchies that attempt to reinforce certain power dynamics.
The project uses creative research methods including maps, poetry, mosaics and graffiti to remove linguistic barriers to expression and democratise the data collection process.
Reflections on the creative research methodology using the researchers' journals was presented at the International Creative Research Methods conference (Nemouchi and Summers, 2024). A chapter based on preliminary findings is forthcoming in E. Cudworth and R. Higdon (eds) Educating Young People for a Sustainable Future: Perspectives on Equity, Inclusion and Social Justice, Emerald (Studies in the Sociology of Education Series), 2025.
